There are a variety of ways to leave the resort and venture off on your own. You can do so safely and easily, you don't have to rely on an organized tour to take you.
Taxis
Taxis are available at the resort. Ask a bell boy to call one for you. This is the most expensive option. All taxis are painted white with blueish green accents. They drive very fast so be prepared. The taxi driver can take you where you like, wait for you or you can arrange a pick-up time.
The taxi rates are posted in the hotel lobbies. Make sure you agree on a price before you get in the taxi, and you can negotiate as well.
You can pay in pesos or US$.
Buses
The bus is inexpensive and comfortable. They are large, air-conditioned coach buses. There are bus shelters outside the resort. The bus that stops at the shelter on the side of the road of the resort takes you north towards Playa del Carmen. The other side of the road takes you south towards Tulum. You must pay in pesos.
Colectivos
Colectivos are mini vans that the locals use almost exclusively. You go out to the road and watch for one, then flag it down. They can be a bit crowded and drive fast. You can pay in pesos or US$s.
Renting a car
Budget rental agencies are available in the Caribe and Colonial lobbies. This is a pricy option but it gives you the freedom to go where you want on your own schedule. You can negotiate and get a better price than the one quoted. You will need a drivers license and a credit card.
We rented a car several times and never had any problems. It allowed us to explore areas that we would have never had a chance to see.

Airport transfers
Airport transfers are typically included in your all inclusive package. This is usually a bus that will take all the passengers from your flight and stop at a couple other resorts before you get to Barcelo Maya.
If you are booking your flight and hotel separately, you have to arrange your own transfer. Or, if you have airport transfer included but would prefer a private, direct ride to the resort, you can arrange an airport transfer. You need to let your tour company know that you are arranging your own transfer so the bus doesn't wait for you.
The current rate is about $120-$140 US$ for 2 people from the airport and back. You must pre-arrange this service. The driver will wait for you outside the airport with your name on a sign and wisk you to Barcelo Maya, beating the bus and you'll arrive on the beach before everyone else.
