You typically don't need to carry a lot of cash on your vacation because all your meals and activities are all inclusive. However, if you want to participate in extra activities or offsite trips, you will need a little more. Always leave any valuables in the safe in your room.
Both US$ and Mexican pesos are widely accepted. I recommend bringing a small amount of US$s or pesos in small bills and the bulk of your cash in your home currency.
Exchanging money
Exchange small amounts of your home currency at the resort currency exchange, located at the front desk, as you need it. The exchange rate is comparable to banks and it is very convenient. You can also exchange money in the nearby towns and at the airport.
Bank machines
There is a bank machine in by the business centre at the Colonial Convention Centre. There are also bank machines in the nearby towns. Note that the machines dispense pesos.
Tipping
We tip a fair bit while at Barcelo Maya. A few dollars to us is not as important as it is to the staff at the resort. You can tip the maids, mini-bar person, bartenders, waiters, gardeners. Tip when you appreciate someone's work; it is not necessary to tip to receive good service.
Change
Bell hops and bell captains typically get paid in small notes, making them the fastest way to change large bills into smaller bills.
Excursions and activities
Most excursions and extra activities will take credit cards. It usually works out a little cheaper if you can pay cash.
Shopping
Some of the shops onsite at the resort will accept cash, credit or charge to your room. It varies from shop to shop. In the towns, most shops will accept US$ or Pesos, however if you pay with US$, you will get pesos as change.
Credit cards
Credit cards are widely accepted. Your charges will be billed in Pesos or US and converted to your home currency. Many credit cards will charge a 2%-2.5% foreign currency surcharge. Be sure to call your credit card provider before your trip so they are aware that you will be using the card out of the country. Otherwise, your charges in Mexico could be flagged as suspicious and be denied.
Travellers Cheques
Travellers cheques are not widely used. It is much easier to deal with cash or credit. However, if you feel safer, you can take travellers cheques. Most banks and the resort will charge you a small fee to convert them to cash.
